Brightleaf Square District has tobacco warehouses which have been made into house shops, nightlife watering holes and eateries. This amazing shopping district is located towards the western end of Downtown Durham and is registered with the National Register for historic places. Duke Homestead State- A Historic Site
This is a national landmark where the famous Duke family began its global tobacco empire. The tobacco operations commenced after they learn of how popular bright leaf tobacco was with Civil war soldiers. This historic place includes a mid-1800s Duke family home as well as original factory. It also is home to a farm where you can see the operation of early farming methods.
